Choosing The Good Part
Joy, happiness, and peace
in our journey of life are priceless! There are so many “important” things that are pulling our lives in so many directions that at the end of the day we can find ourselves with nothing left to offer to those who mean the most to us.
Paul the Apostle wrote in 1 Corinthians 14:10 “there are many kinds of voices in the world and all of them carry some level of significance.” (Paraphrased)
It seems that “Life in the Fast Lane” is not all it’s cracked up to be as our days become filled up and soon become weeks. Then the weeks become months and the next thing we know years have gone by and those who are most important to us are getting less and less of us because all those other voices are taking more and more from us. We can read an incredible example of this in the Bible:
Luke 10:38-42 It came to pass as they travelled that they entered a certain village and a woman named Martha received them into her house. She had a sister named Mary, which sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to what He was saying. Martha however, was encumbered with much serving and she came to Jesus and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister Mary is not helping me serve?” Jesus answered, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about a lot of things, but “one thing is needed” and Mary has chosen “that good part” and it will not be taken away from her!”
This account reveals to us the importance of being intentional with our relationships! There will always be “things” to be worried about and that need our attention. So sometimes we actually need to schedule time away from all of those many voices in the world and sit and listen to the heart and the words of those we love. Jesus called this “the one thing that was needed.” He also called it “that good part.”
Time is racing by at an incredible pace and our lives are being pulled in many kinds of directions by all those significant “voices.” They can cause us to worry and feel stressed. So take time to bend down on your knees and hug that child or grandchild of yours and listen to their words! Take the time to hear the heart of your spouse and turn your phones off when you are eating a meal together. Those other voices can leave a message that you can pick up after you have chosen that one thing that is needed, that good part that makes all the demands of life worth the price.
To us who are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, the most important relationship of all is the one we have with Him! I have been married over 36 years and one of the biggest assets to our relationship is that we intentionally spend time together. We are also blessed with three sons, some incredible daughter-in-laws, and 11 grandchildren. When I think of how wonderful those relationships are and how my wife Jane and I so value them, we are truly rich. But even above the knowing smile of my wife and the adoring eyes of my grandchildren and the sound of their voices calling me “papa” or “grandpa,” the relationship with Jesus is so much more precious. No wonder the account of Mary sitting at His feet and hearing His words was called “one thing is needed” and “that good part” and it will not be taken away from her!”
We do fight a spiritual enemy who works very diligently to wear us out with all that life demands. His goal is to make us believe we are separated from God. But friend, God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Son are all about giving us individual attention. So even with more intentionality than we even do with our closest of family, let’s practice this good part and make certain that in our journey we have that one thing that is needed in place in our lives.
This will surely give you joy in your journey and a glad heart and peace of mind.
Choosing the good part will produce great results in your journey!
